Difference between Tequila and Sotol

Tequila is the most representative alcoholic beverage of Mexico in the world. For several years now, tequila has held a prestigious place in the best bars and restaurants in different cities. Whether taken alone or as the main ingredient in different cocktails, tequila is one of the most sought-after and prestigious alcoholic beverages worldwide.

On the other hand, although it is also a drink of Mexican origin, sotol is probably the least known alcoholic beverage of this nationality. It is worth mentioning that currently this drink is produced practically by hand, without industrial processes intervening yet. This is because it is not as popular a drink as tequila, mix, pulque and other Mexican liquors.

Etymology The word tequila comes from Nahuatl and literally means “place where it is cut”. Sotol or zotol also comes from Nahuatl. Its original word is tzotollin and means “sweet head”.
What is it? Tequila is the product of fermentation and distillation of the juice obtained from the heart of the blue agave.  As for sotol, this drink is the product of pineapple distillation from the sotol plant. Currently, this drink is produced almost exclusively by hand. Many people have described its body and flavor as quite similar to tequila and mezcal.
Plant from which it comes Agave ( agave azul/ agave tequilana weber ) ONLY. Sotol comes from the Dasylirion . This plant is known as sotol or sereque by the Rarámuri communities.
Where is it produced? Due to its denomination of origin, tequila can only be produced in 5 Mexican states. These are Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit and Tamaulipas. On the other hand, sotol is produced in the northern states of Mexico and the southern United States. These are Coahuila, Durango, Chihuahua, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico.
