Difference between OLTP and OLAP

Main Difference

Information technology is the way to go; this era is known as the IT era, but what exactly is an IT system can confuse people. It is a computer-based information system consisting of machines and individuals that collect information and then present it for people to gain knowledge. It is a database where all the information is collected with the help of different tools. Online analytical processing is a term related to computer technology that examines all the data that comes through the system. Many properties, such as multidimensional data analysis and information processing, and have applications in business, writing of data and report generation. Two different types of data analysis tools are known as OLAP and OLTP. They are different from each other in many ways. The first difference is the names themselves, OTAP stands for Online Transaction Processing while OLAP stands for Online Analytical Processing. The main difference between them is that OLTP focuses on the small transactions they perform and analyzes in detail the quick query process. OLAP, on the other hand, looks at all the data that has been entered into the system with few transactions and finds a better response time. Another difference between them is that there is a significant level of operations at the OLTP level while the number of operations is less at the OLAP level. They also differ in the way they work and perform specific tasks. The OLTP system controls all the functions of the system and then executes the necessary business tasks that need to be done. OLAP, on the other hand, helps make critical decisions for the system, solves different problems, and allows planning of specific tasks to be carried out. Both deal with various types of queries, the OLTP system, has queries that are small and simple and have minor records. The OLAP system solves more challenging questions involving multiple records. The other difference between them is that an OLTP system is primarily known as an operating system while an OLAP system is known as a data warehouse. There are many other differences between them which are listed at the end, but some of the detailed descriptions of both types of systems are given in the next two paragraphs. OLAP system solves more challenging questions involving various records. Comparison chart

OLTP OLAP
Full name Online transaction processing Online analytical processing
Working It focuses on the small transactions that take place and takes a detailed look at the fast consultation process. Look at all the data that has been entered into the system with few transactions and find a better response time.
data usage Use operational data. Use consolidation data.
Activities It shows an image of all the activities that take place in a business environment. Shows different views of individual events.

OLTP system definition

OLTP stands for Online Transaction Processing and it is the type of information technology that helps to manage the different transactions that take place in such business related environments, they control all the data that has been entered and point towards the exact location of the data whenever necessary. Other features of this include that it provides a picture view of all business related activities taking place at the current time. It helps to manage and execute different business activities while the stored data is in the form of operational data. It also allows backup and recovery, which gives it an advantage over others, although this requires more space than necessary. To carry out the transactions, less space is required for the system to function on a smaller level in a current state. These are simple queries that have less data, which also have fewer records. Therefore, the speed of the OLTP system is fast.

OLAP system definition

OLAP stands for Online Analytical Processing and performs multidimensional analysis that checks data across different business activities and solves complex problems. The main purpose of this is to solve these problems, suggest solutions and make decisions that help improve the system. It is known as a system that is relatively slow, but that is because it has to analyze a wide range of data that may contain important files. Therefore, the speed is variable depending on the process in question. No proper backups available, but data can be loaded from different environments, saving space and simplifying the system. It has consolidated data, which means that the information comes from various sources, but it can be viewed in multi-dimensional views for different business activities, but deals with composite systems rather than taking the easier route. It has longer refresh times and takes a while to refresh the data as it is not available in a suitable space.

Differences in a nutshell

  1. OTAP stands for Online Transaction Processing while OLAP stands for Online Analytical Processing.
  2. OLTP focuses on the small transactions that take place and looks in detail at the fast query process. OLAP, on the other hand, looks at all the data that has been entered into the system with few transactions and finds a better response time.
  3. OLTP system uses operational data while OLAP system uses consolidation data.
  4. The main purpose of an OLTP system is to control and enable core business tasks to continue, while the main function of the OLAP system is to help make critical decisions, solve problems, and plan.
  5. The OLTP system is known as an operating system while the OLAP system is known as a data system.
  6. The OLTP system shows a picture of all the activities that take place in a business environment, while the OLAP system shows different views of individual events.
  7. The OLTP system solves simple and small queries, while the OLAP system deals with complex questions.
  8. Online transaction processing is relatively fast, while online analytical processing depends on the type of data involved.
  9. A smaller space is required to work in the case of transaction processing, while more space is needed for analytical processing.
  10. There are adequate backups that exist in the OLTP environment, while data reloading is the most favorable option when it comes to an OLAP system.

Final Thought

Computer architecture and understanding terms associated with it can be a troublesome task and these two terms above are similar that they have several differences between them but they always seem similar to each other. This article therefore seeks to explain the differences between them to help people create a clear understanding.
