What is Nationalism

Nationalism is an ideology or sociopolitical doctrine focused on the importance of a country having its national identity as a priority. According to nationalism, the forces of a people must be focused towards the construction and/or defense of their nation. This ideology attributes to each nation its own entity along with a cultural identity (ethnicity, religion, culture, race). This identity is specific to each nation and makes it different from others. Nationalism evokes in the people feelings such as pride in the achievements of the nation and the appreciation of its own characteristics.

Despite being very similar, it is important not to confuse nationalism with imperialism. Imperialism, on the one hand, seeks economic expansion and domination of territories other than its own. In fact, it is safe to say that nationalism is more closely related to patriotism than to imperialism.
