Differences between Michael Gambon and Richard Harris

Michael Gambon and Richard Harris are two British actors who played the character of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter saga. Both contributed to the character a series of elements that characterized him and made him one of the favorites of the saga, as its author JK Rowling admits.

Michael Gambon enters the saga replacing Richard Harris who died approximately two weeks before the premiere of the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Despite their great physical resemblance, complemented by a very complete makeup process, there were certain differences, which we will point out after the description of each actor.

Michael Gambon

Michael Gambon is an Irish-British actor born in 1940 in Dublin, Ireland. He is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he developed his career not only in film but also in theater and television. He debuted in 1962 with the play Othello and from then on he played countless leading roles that led him to establish himself as a world-renowned actor.

In 2002 due to the death of Richard Harris, Michael Gambon was selected to play the character of the wizard Albus Dumbledore, in the Harry Potter saga. After that, he continued to play the same role in the sequels Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and the Hallows of Death – Part 1 (2010) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011).

The contribution that the actor made to the character Dumbledore was one of greater strength and character as opposed to the sweetness that the previous actor manifested. That is why, for many fans of the Gambon saga, he was the one who best represented the wizard director of Hogwarts Academy. However, this contribution by Gambon does not coincide with the description of the author who points to Dumbledore as a magician with a sweet, wise and powerful look and with a certain childish attitude.

Richard Harris

Richard Harris was an Irish actor, singer and screenwriter born in Limerick, Ireland, on October 1, 1930 and died in London on October 25, 2002. He studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and developed a fruitful career as singer and actor of theater, television and cinema.

In his most recent works he played the role of Albus Dumbledore in the first two films of the Harry Potter saga in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), which was his last film work. , since, he passed away a few days before the premiere of the film.

The contribution of this actor to this character was mainly the accuracy with which he is described by the author in the books, interpreting him with a friendly, sweet and calm profile. According to many followers and critics of the saga, this actor was the one who came closest to the description of the author and that is why, for many, he was her favorite. However for others, it was a somewhat weak and characterless performance for a character of such magnitude.

In view of the above, the following differences between both actors are presented:

  • Michael Gambon played the character of Albus Dumbledore in five movies while Richard Harris played the character in 2 movies.
  • Richard Harris was an actor, singer and screenwriter while Michael Gambon was an actor.

Richard Harris passed away in 2002 while Michael Gambon is still working.
