The Law of General Organization of the Educational System entered into force in Spain in 1990 to replace the Law of 1970. With this law, important changes were made to the educational system in its different levels and modalities. Thus, in the baccalaureate the changes included the incorporation of basic professional training that allowed the student to build the various training itineraries towards professional qualification, that is, it provided elementary training according to their vocation or vocational orientation developed in five modalities.
In the same order of ideas, the modalities were specified as Arts, Natural and Health Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Technology. These modalities were linked to certain university careers and would favor the transition of students to university education.
On the other hand, the LOGSE is the first law that includes special education classrooms at primary education levels. Likewise, the LOGSE baccalaureate has a duration of two academic years with common subjects, modality subjects and elective subjects. During the second academic year, the so-called selectivity test or PAU (University Access Test) was carried out in which students opted for higher studies at different universities.
This Organic Law of Education entered into force in Spain in 2006 to replace the Law of General Organization of the Educational System of 1990. This law supposes more than a radical change of the educational system, an update of it, since its objective was simplify and streamline the structure of the national curriculum. The baccalaureate according to the LOE continued to be developed in two courses but the modalities offered in the LOGSE became 3: Arts (with two options: Plastic Arts, Design and Image and Performing Arts, Music and Dance), Science and Technology and Humanities and Sciences Social.
Next, the LOE baccalaureate also contains common subjects, modality subjects and optional subjects in its curriculum. In addition, the LOE allows an extraordinary test of the subjects not passed in order to be eligible for a higher degree or an academic title. In the second year of studies, the Entrance Test for Official Degree Teaching is carried out, which is necessary to pursue university studies.
One of the fundamental characteristics of the LOE baccalaureate was the improvement of the system for the continuation of students with special educational needs in order to facilitate the social and labor integration of the students.
According to what was previously stated, the main differences between the LOGSE baccalaureate and the LOE baccalaureate can be summarized as:
- The LOGSE baccalaureate was developed in five modalities that are Arts, Natural and Health Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Technology while the LOE baccalaureate was developed in three Arts modalities (with two options: Plastic Arts, Design and Image and Performing Arts, Music and Dance), Science and Technology and Humanities and Social Sciences.
- The LOGSE high school was valid between 1990 and 2006 while the LOE high school was valid between 2006 and 2013.
- The LOGSE high school incorporated the system for the prosecution of students with special educational needs, while the LOE high school perfected the system for the prosecution of students with special educational needs, creating the guidance department.
