Difference between Independence and Autonomy

Independence and autonomy are different concepts used in politics and in daily life. Independence in its political concept indicates the formation or restoration of a country after separating from another, while autonomy in a country indicates that a territory has a certain degree of autonomy in its laws and organization, but they respond to a central government. .

Independence

The concept of independence as a political concept appeared with the Declaration of Independence of the USA in 1776 against European colonialism and was extended with the Act of Independence of Haiti and the declarations of the Latin American countries that would depend on the Spanish empire. Independence is the formation or restoration of one country by separating from another.

Independence is also a condition of an individual or an organism having no dependency on an agent other than themselves. It is the characteristic quality of individuals who have the condition to defend themselves and develop. Independence requires freedom, being able to decide and the staging of actions that do not depend on an order established by an external agent.

Autonomy

Autonomy comes from the Latin word auto which means “oneself” and nomo which means norm. This means that autonomy is the ability of a person or an entity to establish its rules and be governed to make decisions. For psychology, autonomy is the ability of an individual to think, feel and make decisions.

This encompasses a series of characteristics or elements that are related to personal self-management. In the political aspect, autonomy defines those countries or regions that have some freedom to establish their laws and government, but respond to a central government.
