They are known as the largest cell in the human anatomy and can be easily seen with the naked eye. They range in size from 0.15 to 0.2 mm and are surrounded by the zona pellicuda, which is a transparent, non-cellular area. They have a large volume of cytoplasm and mitochondria are scattered in it. The egg exists only for 12-24 hours and cannot be preserved. They are not mobile and are produced in a cyclical process. The ovum does not continue to produce throughout the life of the female.
