Ethyl vs. Methyl

Methyl and ethyl are the terms used to name the group of atoms that are attached to the main carbon chain. They are called alkyl substituents. Ethyl is the group made up of five hydrogen atoms and two carbon atoms. Methyl, on the other hand, is the group that is made up of three hydrogen atoms and one carbon. –C 2 H 5 is called the chemical formula of the ethyl group. The methyl group, on the other hand, has the chemical formula –CH 3 .
