The core of the tube is used to form a long tube that can carry the pollen grain to the end of the tube. When the sperm reach the bottom, the generative nucleus fuses with the female egg and then forms a zygote. Another sperm followed the same path and reached the bottom; they attempt to fuse with the zygote and then form the triple nucleus endosperm.

The two sperm form a zygote and one of the three spores forms a covering to provide protection and food. This zygote within the shell develops into an ovule and then into fruits and seeds. The outer covering or seed coat protects damage from surrounding hazards and protects the zygote from drying out completely from the surrounding heat.
