Difference Between Waxing and Waning

Main difference

The main difference between waxing and waning moon phases is that a waxing is the phase at any time before a full moon and after a new moon whose illuminated area is increasing and a waning moon is a moon at any time after the full moon and before the new moon whose illuminated area is decreasing.

Increasing vs. Waning

The terms waxing and waning are usually related to the phases of the moon. The process of change of the lunar phases between the full moon and the new moon is included within the terms waning and growing. Increasing means that something is approaching its maximum property. Waning means something is approaching its minimum property. A crescent moon is going from a new moon to a full moon. Or the crescent moon goes from between the Earth and the sun to behind the Earth. In this journey, the crescent moon is losing its darkness and gaining its light. In the waning phase, the opposite happens to the moon until it reaches the new moon, completely dark. The crescent moon develops or becomes larger. It fits in the shape of a “D”. The waning moon cuts off or shrinks. Fits the letter ‘C’. The crescent moon is the lunar phase that begins when the moon has just passed its darkest phase to its brightest phase. The waning moon is the lunar phase that begins when the moon has just passed its brightest and fullest phase. The waxing moon is the growth phase when the moon increases in size from new moon to full moon. The waning moon is the shrinking phase when the moon decreases in size from full moon to new moon (when it cannot be seen by us at all). The crescent moon increases in size. The waning moon decreases in size. The waxing moon is the growth phase when the moon increases in size from new moon to full moon. The waning moon is the shrinking phase when the moon decreases in size from full moon to new moon (when it cannot be seen by us at all). The crescent moon increases in size. The waning moon decreases in size. The waxing moon is the growth phase when the moon increases in size from new moon to full moon. The waning moon is the shrinking phase when the moon decreases in size from full moon to new moon (when it cannot be seen by us at all). The crescent moon increases in size. The waning moon decreases in size.Comparison chart

What is the crescent moon?

Light falls on the moon from the sun as it travels around the earth. The moon gets smaller and bigger depending on its distance and position from the sun. However, half of the moon is always illuminated because its half always receives light from the sun. We cannot see all this portion. We only see part of the moon at a time, as it continues to move in its orbit. The reason we see the moon growing (waxing) and shrinking (waning) is due to the sunlight that the moon emits towards us. Every lunar month, which is 29.5 days long, the moon goes through 8 phases. These phases are: new moon (dark moon or no moon), crescent moon, first quarter moon, crescent moon, full moon, waning moon, third quarter moon and waning moon. The moon takes different forms from the new moon to the full moon when it is waxing. A crescent moon is a moon at any time after the new moon, and before the full moon whose illuminated areas are increasing is called a crescent moon. A crescent moon is a lunar phase that begins when the moon has just passed its darkest phase and continues until the moon is at its brightest. When the moon is waxing, each night you can see a strip that is increasing. The moon, in its waxing phase, looks similar to the capital letter “D”. In this phase, the right side of the moon is smooth and rounded. The left side looks darker and patchier. and before the full moon whose illuminated areas are increasing is called a crescent moon. The left side looks darker and patchier. in its growing phase, it looks similar to the capital letter “D”. In this phase, the right side of the moon is smooth and rounded. The left side looks darker and patchier. in its growing phase, it looks similar to the capital letter “D”. In this phase, the right side of the moon is smooth and rounded. The left side looks darker and patchier.

What is the waning moon?

The reason we see the moon waxing (waxing) and waning (waning) is due to the sunlight the moon emits towards us. Every lunar month, which is 29.5 days long, the moon goes through 8 phases. These phases are: new moon, crescent moon, first quarter moon, crescent moon, full moon, waning moon, third quarter moon and waning moon. The moon takes various forms when it is waning. The moon after the full moon and before the new moon whose illuminated surface decreases is a waning moon. the moon, in its waning phase, looks like the capital letter “C”. its right side appears darker, more indistinct. Its left side is smooth and rounded. The waning moon is the lunar phase that begins when the moon has just passed through its brightest and fullest. Continue until the moon can no longer be easily seen. In the waning phase, the moon appears to shrink each night. It loses light and gains darkness until it reaches the new moon, completely dark.

Key differences

  1. Increase means that something is approaching its maximum property, while decrease means that something is decreasing or approaching its minimum property.
  2. In the growing phase, the moon loses its darkness and gains light on the opposite side, in the waning phase, the opposite happens to the moon until it reaches the new moon, completely dark.
  3. The waxing moon develops or increases in size, while the waning moon shrinks or decreases.
  4. The crescent moon fits into the shape of a ‘D’. On the other hand, the waning moon fits the letter ‘C’.
  5. The waxing moon is the phase in which the moon increases in size from new moon to full moon, while the waning moon is the phase in which the moon shrinks from full moon to new moon.

Final Thought

Waxing and waning are the terms that relate to the phases of the moon. The process of the lunar phases from new moon to full moon falls under the terms waning and waxing.
