The term is broad in its meaning; it can be an institution, a funded agency or have some link with trade associations. The national academies are the research and innovation organizations in the area, financed by state governments. One of their examples is the British Royal Society. Members are selected based on merit in the relevant field; the decision is made by the higher members of society or the government. In Russia, academy refers to a research institution.
