Difference Between Mitosis and Meiosis

What is Mitosis?

Mitosis is a biological process that occurs or occurs in living beings, and comes before cell division or meiosis . That is, mitosis is related to the growth of cells in bodies. It also regenerates cells and produces natural defenses in the body.

Mitosis is present in asexual living beings . That is, it occurs in plants, which do not need to have a relationship with another organism to reproduce.

Mitosis has its origin in the cytoplasm of the cell , and acts as a transformer in stem cells, creating components that allow a cell to be replaced, regenerated or improved.

The process of mitosis is divided into four phases : prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase, during all of which it performs its functions within the body of the living being. In mitosis, a diploid cell gives rise to two diploid cells with the same genetic information.

Main features of mitosis :

  1. A short process that occurs in the cells of animals, plants, and humans that reproduce asexually .
  2. They divide into two cells.
  3. It is produced in organisms with eukaryotic cells .
  4. They do not give rise to diversity.
  5. Reproduction process through cells that have the same genetic information and chromosomes.
  6. It has four phases.

mitosis example

Somatic cells only divide through mitosis.

What is Meiosis?

Meiosis is a biological process where cells divide, and is closely related to sexual or reproductive cells , causing them to duplicate two by two during metamorphosis. The resulting cells maintain the same characteristics and identity functions as the first ones. In this way, sperm and egg cells are formed .

The divisions in meiosis have a name, the first part or phase of separation is called diploid (since the cell separates into two), but the second phase, which is when the cell divides into four, is called diploid. haploid name .

It is worth noting that it was in 1890 that the process of meiosis was described as necessary for reproduction and inheritance.

Main features of meiosis :

  1. It is a long process that occurs in the sex cells or gonads.
  2. It divides the cells into four, two with genetic information and two with chromosomes.
  3. The resulting cells are spores or gametes.
  4.  They reproduce in pairs of organisms.
  5. It has two stages of four phases each.

example of meiosis

In organisms that have sexual reproduction, the germ cells divide by meiosis, giving rise to sexual cells or gametes.

Difference Between Mitosis and Meiosis

-In mitosis: two daughter cells with the same amount of genetic material.

-In meiosis: four cells are formed with half of the genetic material.

-The most important difference between mitosis and meiosis is that they are two different forms of cell division in eukaryotic cells, cells that have a nucleus. Giving rise to the formation of other cells. This means that depending on the type of cell, it can divide either by meiosis or mitosis.
