Both words originate from the Chinese word “ke-tsiap”, which is a pickled fish sauce. This dish found its way to Malaysia and Indonesia, where it became “kechap”   and “ketjap” , respectively. Ketchup and ketchup are both acceptable and can be used interchangeably. However, ketchup is much more popular than ketchup. Catsup has the same origin as ketchup, and in fact is a romanization of it. Catsup arose from trying to pronounce sounds that do not exist in most Romance languages.

In the 1800s, the word “ketchup” was used more in Great Britain while “ketchup” was used more in the United States. Today, however, the word “ketchup” is more popular in both countries than “ketchup”. Neither word excludes the other, that is, there is no correct or incorrect version of the word. Sometimes the only thing that varies is the writing, because the pronunciation can be the same.
