It can be said that Catholics are the faithful and believers of the Christian-Catholic religion. The term catholic comes from the Greek word –katholikē-, which refers to being in agreement with everything, that is, it refers to all those who considered themselves followers of Jesus and who therefore should be united in Christ, being only one. .
On the other hand, Catholics have various places of worship such as chapels, cathedrals, and basilicas. They are allowed to worship different deities (saints, blessed, venerable and even the Virgin Mary, mother of God) through images. In addition, they have seven sacraments such as baptism, confirmation, Eucharist, reconciliation, anointing of the sick, priestly orders and marriage.
Also, Catholics believe in the Holy Bible, a collection of canonical books divided into two parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament with a total of 73 books. Likewise, they recognize the papal authority as the highest representative of the church and vicar of Christ on earth. On the other hand, with respect to the clergy, in addition to recognizing the pope, there are cardinals, archbishops, bishops and priests, monks and deacons.
For this religion women can be nuns. They consider that there is eternal salvation in paradise or eternal damnation in hell. There is also a third temporary option, called purgatory. Additionally, they believe in the confession of sins to God through the priests.
It is known that Protestants are the faithful and believers of Protestantism, a Christian religious current that had its origin in the ideas of the German Martin Luther in the 16th century. He is characterized by believing that salvation does not depend on works but on faith and for considering the Bible as the only source of all his teachings.
Protestants defend the essential equality of all members of the Church and only has two sacraments, baptism and the Eucharist. Next, like Catholics, they have various places of worship such as chapels, cathedrals and basilicas, although they are not allowed to worship saints or other deities through images.
Similarly, they believe in the Bible, a collection of canonical books divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament with a total of 66 books. In addition, they do not recognize the papal authority and regarding the clergy, they consider that each church is independent, led by the pastor, priests and deacons.
Protestants believe that the church was founded by Jesus Christ together with his disciples, they support the idea that women cannot be part of the clergy but are allowed to work in religious teaching and other areas. In this order of ideas, for Protestants there is no purgatory, so those who believe in Jesus Christ as their savior go to paradise and those who believe that they themselves are their salvation will go to hell. Finally, they confess their sins to God through Jesus Christ.
In attention to the above, the following table is presented where the most important differences between Catholics and Protestants are indicated:
