Difference between Bichon Maltese and Coton de Tuléar

Among all the existing dog breeds, some of them are physically very similar even though they are different breeds. That is why it is possible that some dog owners have a dog of one breed and think that it belongs to another, as in the case of the American Pitbull Terrier and the American Stanford Terrier, which have a great physical resemblance.

This is also the case of the Maltese Bichon and the Coton de Tuléar, species of great physical similarity that are often confused. That is why, in this article, we present the differences between these two breeds of dogs, starting with the definitions and characteristics of each of them.

The Maltese Bichon is a dog from Malta, whose taxonomic classification is as follows: Kingdom animalia, Filo chordata, Class Mammalia, Order carnívora, Family caniade, Genus canis and Species bichone and subspecies melitaei. It is presented as an intelligent, lively, affectionate and agile dog that is always attentive to its surroundings, observing what its owners do, for whom it feels great appreciation.

This dog is very easy to learn and is a good dog for walking and company. Among the physical characteristics of the Maltese Bichon we have that, the head is slightly oval, the snout is short and rounded with the characteristic fur that falls on the sides of it, the nose is black, the fur is completely white, long, light and straight, its eyes are round and dark, the ears are somewhat triangular and fall to the sides but are somewhat erect and not completely drooping.

Additionally, among other characteristics, the weight must be between 3 and 4 kilograms, the males being heavier than the females, the height of the males ranges between 21 and 25 centimeters and that of the females between 20 and 23 centimeters. centimeters.

Coton de Tulear

The Cotón de Tuléar is a dog from Madagascar whose taxonomic classification is as follows: Kingdom animalia, Filo chordata, Class Mammalia, Order carnívora, Family caniade, Genus canis and Species bichone and subspecies tuleaei. They are very sweet, cheerful, playful, intelligent and sociable dogs that adapt easily to different situations and tend to be very funny, they generally need company to feel good.

Among the physical characteristics of the Cotón de Tuléar we have that, the head is short and seen from above it has a triangular shape, the snout is straight and elongated with a dark-colored nose, the coat is cottony (hence its name), like puffed, abundant and dense, always white, but some small beige or light gray spots on some parts of the body are allowed.

Likewise, among other physical features we can find round and dark eyes, triangular and hanging ears but not completely drooping but rather raised. The size of the males ranges between 26 and 28 centimeters and that of the females between 23 and 25 centimeters, the weight of the males is between 4 and 6 kilograms and that of the females between 3.5 and 5 kilograms.

In attention to the characteristics indicated, some of the differences between these two species are:

  • The Maltese Bichon comes from Malta while the Coton de Tulear comes from Madagascar.
  • The snout of the Maltese Bichon is shorter and rounded while the Cotón de Tuléar has it more elongated.
  • The Maltese Bichon’s hair is naturally straight and less dense, while the Cotón de Tuléar has it rather puffed, cottony and denser.
